Train Protection Warning System(TPWS) To Be Installed Soon!!

After many rail mishaps, now finally Railways took a decision to install Train Protection Warning System (TPWS) on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata route which is considered as the most busy route in the northern railway zone.TPWS automatically brakes the train when the loco pilot jumps the red signal but is estimated to cost a prohibitive Rs 50 lakh per kilometre.
TPWS will also cover the suburban rail route of Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. The trial of TPWS is going on the 200 km Delhi-Agra route and the 60 km Chennai-Gumudipundi route under a pilot project for which the railways have earmarked Rs 250 crore.
“The trial is at the final stage. We are planning to install TPWS after certain modifications in some of our busiest routes in the first phase,” said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the project.
Of the total 2763 train accidents between 2000 and 2010, more than 50 per cent accidents have been attributed to failure of railway staff.
The cause of the recent train accident near Chennai in which the Chennai-Beach-Vellore passenger train rammed a stationary train is also being attributed to human failure.
Though the Commissioner Railway safety is probing the cause of the mishap, prima facie it seems the driver of the passenger train overshot the signal leading to the accident which claimed 10 lives.
“An equipment has to be installed in the loco cabin and another in the signal pole along the rail track to make the TPWS operational,” the official said.
“As per the plan, we will cover the 2500 km automatic signalling system route with TPWS in the first phase including busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata route and also the suburban section of Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai,” he said.
Currently, the automatic warning system is operational in suburban section of Central and Western Railway for the last 15 years. “The system is very effective as there has been no accident on these suburban sections in the last 15 years,” said the official.
TPWS is the advanced version of the automatic warning system.
